Bulgarian language

Bulgarian is the official language of the Republic of Bulgaria and is spoken by the majority of people in the country. Along with Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian and Macedonian, it is in the subgroup of the Southern Slavic languages. More than 11 million native Bulgarian speakers live in Bulgaria and neighbouring areas of Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia and Macedonia, as well as in areas of Dobruja and Banat in Romania; a small number of Bulgarian speakers live in Ukraine and Moldova. The origin of the ethnonym "Bulgarian" is associated with the name of the Turkish Bulgar tribe. In 680AD the Bulgars subjugated the Slavic population in present-day North-East Bulgaria, but were quickly assimilated by the Slavs, leaving their only mark in the Bulgarian language in the form of a small number of Turkisms. There are three periods in the history of the Bulgarian language: Old Bulgarian, which is very close to Old Church Slavonic (10th - 11th Century), Middle Bulgarian (12th - 15th Century) and Modern Bulgarian (starting from the 16th Century). Modern Bulgarian literary language was formed in 1820-1830, when interest grew in the problems of public education; its origins lie in the national revival of the second half of the 18th Century, which was marked by the publication of the Slavonic-Bulgarian History in 1762 by Saint Paisius of Hilendar.
