Macedonian language

Macedonian is the language of the Macedonian people and the official language of the Republic of Macedonia. It is the native language of 800,000 Macedonian Slavs. It is used as a second language by Albanians, Turks, Vlachs and Roma who also live in the area. It belongs to the Eastern branch of the South Slavic languages. The main dialect groups are Western, Eastern and Northern. Literary Macedonian was formed in the mid 1940’s based on the main dialects of the Western dialect, close to colloquial speech. Macedonian has two writing systems: one based on the Latin alphabet and the other based on the Cyrillic alphabet, although it is the latter which is more common in everyday life. Incidentally, the place where the educators Cyril and Methodius created the Slavic alphabet and first began to teach it to their disciples was not in Bulgaria, as is commonly believed, but in Macedonia. It was at one of the monasteries in the city of Ohrid.
