Polish is an Indo-European language. It is part of the Western subgroup of the Slavic group of languages. It is the official language of the Republic of Poland. There are approximately 42 million Polish speakers. The main dialect groups are: Greater Polish, Lesser Polish, Masovian and Silesian. Polish has an inflectional grammatical structure and synthetic expressions of grammatical meaning are highly common. The stress is fixed on the penultimate syllable. The language is written using the Latin alphabet. The oldest written documents are the Holy Cross Sermons (Polish: Kazania Świętokrzyskie) of the mid 14th Century.
